Glitter, lightning bolts and power shoulders aside, the real hero in Bowie’s wardrobe, for me, is the tailoring.

Championing wide-legged pants, startling cuts and white shirts, his Thin White Duke and Hunky Dory eras are my favourite. He made the mackintosh and trilby cool and paved the way for androgyny, long before it became mainstream. A little Katharine Hepburn, a little Annie Hall, perfect for girls who like to dress as boys.

Lichtenstein: A Retrospective opens at The Tate Modern on 27 Feb.

Famed for his iconic Pop cartoon images, it was actually Lichtenstein’s rarely-seen interpretations of Chinese landscape that caught my eye. A muted palette, still featuring the Benday dot, they were painted in 1996, the year before he died.
